The festival has 2 main elements: the ritual 'Mikoshi Togyo' (神輿渡御 - the touring of the shrine gods in divine palanquins) and the more celebratory 'Yamaboko Junkō' (山鉾巡行 - a parade of highly decorated floats, which emerged in their current form from Muromachi times).

In order to be entertained by the 2 parades, the 3 deities of Yasaka-jinja are brought to the 'Otabisho' (御旅所), a temporary home on Shijō Teramachi. When the second parade is finished, they tour the city and return home for another year.
