In order to be entertained by the 2 parades, the 3 deities of Yasaka-jinja are brought to the 'Otabisho' (御旅所), a temporary home on Shijō Teramachi.
When the second parade is finished, they tour the city and return home for another year.

The highlight of the festival for many are the 'yamaboko' floats (山鉾) and their elaborate decorations. The 34 floats incorporate a huge variety of decorative elements: ceiling paintings, roof carvings, metalwork, dolls, and precious textiles from as far away as Persia and Belgium.
