The highlight of the festival for many are the 'yamaboko' floats (山鉾) and their elaborate decorations. The 34 floats incorporate a huge variety of decorative elements: ceiling paintings, roof carvings, metalwork, dolls, and precious textiles from as far away as Persia and Belgium.

  • Celebrations commence on July 1st with 'Kippu-iri' (吉符入り 'Welcoming Good Fortune'), during which prayers are said for the safety and success of the festival. On this day the sacred page (稚児 'chigo') of the Naginata-boko float (長刀鉾) is introduced to Yasaka-jinja's gods.
