Celebrations commence on July 1st with 'Kippu-iri' (吉符入り 'Welcoming Good Fortune'), during which prayers are said for the safety and success of the festival.
On this day the sacred page (稚児 'chigo') of the Naginata-boko float (長刀鉾) is introduced to Yasaka-jinja's gods.

On July 2nd lots are drawn at the Kyōto Municipal Assembly Hall to determine the order of the floats for the 2 parades. This ritual is known as 'Kujitori-shiki' (くじ取り式 'Lot-Drawing Ceremony'), and was intended to prevent fighting over prized positions in the parade. #GionFestival
