On July 2nd lots are drawn at the Kyōto Municipal Assembly Hall to determine the order of the floats for the 2 parades.
This ritual is known as 'Kujitori-shiki' (くじ取り式 'Lot-Drawing Ceremony'), and was intended to prevent fighting over prized positions in the parade.

Despite the lottery, 10 floats maintain the same place each year (くじ取らずの鉾 the 'Free from Lottery Floats'). Saki Matsuri (先祭り July 17th): ⚔️Naginata-hoko 長刀鉾 =1 ⚔️Kanko-hoko 函谷鉾 =5 ⚔️Hōka-hoko 放下鉾 =21 🌿Iwato-yama 岩戸山 =22 ⚔️Fune-boko 船鉾 =23 #GionMatsuri
