You did the math a thousand times. The job with benefits, the years on the ladder, the sacrifice compounded across decades, the promise handed down that excellence would be enough. You measured everything.

performance,
excellence,
the metrics the system handed you and told you were the ones that counted.
What no one told you, what the system was specifically designed to prevent you from asking, is whether any of it was contribution.

Producing and contributing are not the same thing. Producing is what the table measures. Contribution is what actually changes something for someone. The grade point average, the promotion, the quarterly review, all of them answer how much was produced. None of them ask what the production was for, who it served, or whether the cost was worth it.
