Also, to the many people responding who are saying things about how if he's unable to perform the duties of a senator, yadda yadda, etc., he needs to be replaced: that's not how the rules of the senate go. He could be in a coma from now until the end of his term, and it's still his seat.

  • In 1969, Sen. Karl Mundt (R-SD) suffered a stroke that left him completely unable to do his job. He refused to resign, and SD was basically just without a second senator until the end of his term in 1973.
