In 1969, Sen. Karl Mundt (R-SD) suffered a stroke that left him completely unable to do his job. He refused to resign, and SD was basically just without a second senator until the end of his term in 1973.

  • In 1942, Sen. Carter Glass (D-VA) (he is the Glass in the Glass–Steagall Act) got sick, couldn't work, *got reelected*, still didn't show up to work, and stayed in office until he died 4 years later. During this, he was 3rd in the presidential line of succession (president pro tem of the senate).
