"The gate won't open" is similar to the expression "flogging a dead horse", which is apt because the Japanese phrase springs from the horse races held during the Aoi Matsuri.
The 'Kamo Kurabeuma' (賀茂競馬) occur at Kamigamo-jinja on May 5th.

First held in 1093, one team wears vermillion (Kamigamo-jinja) and the other black (Iwashimizu Hachimangū). One horse starts a length ahead of the other. The winner is determined by whether the gap between the horses has shortened or not.
