Other people I know who thought they were "smarter than the average bear" but actually weren't, have lost their entire life savings speculating on technology stocks that other people told them were "the next big thing", but they didn't have the technical or financial savvy to understand the fundamentals of the products or the accounting.
I personally took a bath on Iridium, then watched a company that spent over $5B USD putting up satellites get bought for $25M.

But, to my broker, I was small potatoes. I watched helplessly as my broker failed to get me any shares of the ARMHY debut, despite me warning him for months in advance that this was a stock that was going to balloon on the merits (and it did, dramatically so). His firm's allocation of the IPO all went to much wealthier inverstors than I. In the late 1990s, most people had never heard of ARM. Now they rule the mobile and embedded markets, because their SoCs are the best designed in the world.
