Also, the actual authors of academic papers don't make their money off of people subscribing to journals, so they're often happy to share their work with curious people.

  • That said, I feel like there's a significant overlap between the set of people who want to read academic papers and the set of people who find the idea of cold emailing a stranger about their work cripplingly anxiety inducing.

    @BathysphereHat@mastodon.online I once got to request a copy of THE seminal (and unavailable) 1975 article from an author, and got to say "congrats on inventing a field" (even though I disagreed with their position.) 😄

    @BathysphereHat@mastodon.online When I describe how academic publishing works to non-academics, they don't believe it. They think they're misunderstanding or that I'm leaving something out.
