Two extra things of note. First, I tried a different kernel too. Specifically Zen which is using 7.0.12 right now, so it's not just the 6.18.35 kernel from the distribution. Second, I tried using those variables without actually disabling variable refresh rates and still got a softlock. So far after turning off variable refresh rates I haven't had a soft lock, so it definitely seems to be the deciding factor, or at least a deciding factor. EDIT: Woops. Those variables weren't correctly set. Apparently env-update is not recursive (it and the devs just think it is) and the /etc/environment.d directory is useless. I'll have to retest with VFR on now that the variables are correctly set. I don't have the spoons to do so just atm though...
