When she was still young her mother married Honjō Munemasa (本庄宗正), who moved his new family to Edo to run the household of the Nijō family.
Keishō-in, known in childhood as Otama (お玉), became lady-in-waiting to Kasuga-no-tsubone (春日局), the old wet-nurse of Iemitsu.

Kasuga-no-tsubone (春日局 1579-1643) chose Keishō-in to become Iemitsu's concubine, and the rest is history. As go-between for the shōgunate and the imperial court, Lady Kasuga was one of the most prominent and powerful politicians of her time, one of Iemitsu's 3 closest aides.
