My 20-something trans cousin got up today at our grandmas memorial and talked about being afraid to come out to grandma because “she was already sick and what if she didn’t accept me and then she died when we weren’t ok.” Grandma was 88 when J came out to her by text; she had never knowingly met a trans person and very very few gay people. My cousin spent two days waiting for the answer and when it came it was “I love you so much” with a ton of heart emojis. It took two days because grandma wanted her answer to be perfect and worried it wouldn’t be. I miss my grandma.
