@b0rk@social.jvns.ca they're a commitment. i needed to learn Unix in a hurry before the days of the web (or the public internet really) so went through every man page in section 1, trying things out as I went. I learned a huge amount from them but at first it was really tough to get my head around the way they were written. Being familiar with your pager's functionality definitely helps. I'm sad these days when a command doesn't have a man page, using -h or --help is always my second impulse. I recently discovered that the man page for ack is the source code for ack, which is truly obnoxious.
