I went to Toronto’s Pride Weekend Dike March for the first time today. I’d been to the Pride parade several times, and wasn’t as excited as I should have been, but my girl friend had never been to any Pride stuff, so I happily went with her, and I’m of course so glad! The peak moment for me was during the speeches. One organizer said, “No revenge, we don’t hate anyone.” The next talked about how to react to inevitable protesters, her advice, of course, was, “confront them with joy,” and she encouraged us to stand with them, then make a great photo op by making out. So much power, so much powerful chanting, solidarity, and strong, charismatic women speaking. As I stood listening to the speeches, tears running down my cheeks, I was grateful for the too rare opportunity to share public grief over where the world is heading. Here’s a photo taken by my friend.
