Did you know, that when I was a teenager, I was goth?
I was among the first goths of my secondary school when it became a more mainstream thing in the early 2000s. I didn’t really have a community, but I started to express myself by dressing in that fashion as a 14-year-old, rebelling against what my mom insisted I should be like.
It was a way to express the hurt I had, because I didn’t really have any other outlet. No outlet in person, so I got to writing online, a lot. And I found likeminded people. Funnily enough, a considerable amount of those people turned out to be queer and/or trans, like me.
I was into horror, both stories and films, and especially vampires, because of course. I was so into it that I got the entire Anne Rice series of books, which I still have. A friend from England once even sent me a small book of vampire lore, because he found it and thought of me 😄 that one I sadly don’t have anymore, I don’t know what happened to it.
Once there was a person who I met online, who was insistent that they were both a vampire and a werewolf, and that they had to be chained to a tree once a month 🤣 that was… something. And this encounter happened before Twilight was a thing, I have to add.
Eventually I guess I sort of grew out of needing to express myself in that fashion, but some things from that era still surface sometimes. The aesthetic is still very pleasing to me, I still sometimes listen to the music, and I still love horror. It’s just not as prominent an aspect as it used to be.

@quester@mementomori.social When I lived in Seattle the first time, I used to go to the Broadway Market. At that time in the early 90s, goth was a huge thing in this shopping center. I really felt at peace amongst these folks. I've always responded to the edgier side of life, I guess. Thanks for sharing your origin story, Quester.
