Is it only candidates from the previous election or does one merely have to run once then can park their candidature for later? What about by-elections? At the obviously unimplementable though ideal end of the spectrum would be the elimination of parties. I'll note that key members of the American Founding Fathers opposed political parties, foretelling many of the issues that we all face today. For the moment, at least, I'd tend to agree and would actually posit that we should have a PM elected from among a house composed of fully independent MP's, which represent constituencies of no more than 100,000 voters, with no political parties allowed. The fact is that the very structure and existence of political parties are inherently liable to be corrupted and the only remedy I can fathom that cannot itself be used to suppress "undesirable" parties is to simply not have them. But, as mentioned above, I've strayed into the impossible.
