@taoeffect@crib.social No, they're not… It's not how VPNs work… VPN is not Tor, VPN has never been designed to be "anonymous" and can never be "anonymous" at all… Replacing with a unique identifier with another unique identifier, with a sigle organization that can link both identifiers is not "anonymisation"… Anyone claiming it is, is either naive and don't understand basics or network computing OR is lying and is only interested in marketing bullshit… (NOT mutually exclusive) @duxsco@fedifreu.de @mullvadnet@mastodon.online

@devnull@mamot.fr @duxsco@fedifreu.de @mullvadnet@mastodon.online It depends on what's meant by "anonymizes". If the person means "makes more anonymous" as I said it's perfectly true. For example, Tor also doesn't give you perfect anonymity. It's just more anonymous than VPNs. Anonymization is a spectrum, it is the process of removing identifiers. Neither Tor nor VPNs do it perfectly. VPNs are more anonymous than a direct connection and Tor is more anonymous than VPN.
