Edible cherries were introduced to Japan fairly recently, at the beginning of the Meiji Period. SatΕ Eisuke (δ½θ€θ±δ») cultivated Japan's most popular cherry, the bright red 'satΕ-nishiki' (δ½θ€ι¦), in the early 1900s. Most domestic cherries are grown in Yamagata Prefecture.
