Edible cherries were introduced to Japan fairly recently, at the beginning of the Meiji Period. Satō Eisuke (佐藤英介) cultivated Japan's most popular cherry, the bright red 'satō-nishiki' (佐藤錦), in the early 1900s.
Most domestic cherries are grown in Yamagata Prefecture.

One sweet I was very sad to miss out on was Itotatsu's 'Kyōto-carrot' (京にんじん), originally created to celebrate the 'year of the rabbit'. Hopefully he'll be inspired by more local vegetables in the future🙏😉 #itotatsu #Kyoto #京都
