Really weird and fantastic stuff, like Sara Good's yellow bird who supposedly fed from an extra nipple between her fingers. In modern neopaganism, familiars are something in the middle. They are usually a pet, but they can also be noncorporeal. They give hints, warnings, and guidance in practice and in everyday life.
