Anyone else deeply get why people want to cognitively offload everything they can to AI? The world is So Much right now. We're all juggling a thousand tasks and chores. Why is my tablet not charging? Why wasn't my prescription filled yesterday? Gotta pay my quarterly estimated taxes, find a new trimmer for the parts of the lawn the mower can't reach, make a dentist appointment cause I'm grinding my teeth at night. New technologies and productivity gains never lead to real ease in our lives. Capitalism greedily gobbles up the difference. It sells us new tools "oh this will make things easier" and we do it because we need it, we're hovering on the edge of burn out, but the end result is we drift further from each other. We replace the resilience of relationships with the fragility of a tool, an app. The problem isn't people. Please don't shame folks for trying to get by. Shame only adds to the overwhelm and sense of isolation. It perpetuates the system, it doesn't dismantle it.

@shauna@social.coop Some of these people realize how sucks the rest of us into their dependency on bigdata surveillance. And from what I can tell they do not give a flying fuck about it and some even enjoy delivering ultimatums for using them.

@shauna@social.coop offloading everything you can to AI is like putting your hands up and closing your eyes when you're behind the wheel. If people complain bitterly about the outcome, they aren't trying to shame the driver. They can plainly see that the driver's culpable behavior was shameful. Making excuses for it is just another shame on top.

@shauna@social.coop it's legitimately hard to parse which actions cause direct harm and which actions are using a system that is harmful but they don't have control over. there is so much grey area it all can blend together.

@shauna@social.coop honestly i feel like seeing the way ai is getting used as a search replacement is a really clear example of this -- there is SO MUCH NOISE AND GARBAGE to dig through, with the worsening state of search engines, asking an unreliable robot to do that work seems like a better option than digging yourself.

@shauna@social.coop @b0rk@social.jvns.ca I do absolutely get it, even though I'm very opposed to LLMs (and the specific companies involved). But it's also very Nineteen Eighty Four. And I don't like that, not one bit.
