I didn't find specific mention of which HPV vaccine were used when in the Lancet article mentioned by the BBC, except for this: "Since the HPV vaccine offered to those born before 2000 was bivalent, it is unlikely to have provided more than 90% protection..."
The bivalent HPV vaccine was called Cervarix in the US. Gardasil came later -- quadravalent, but strains were chosen to cover 2 associated with cervical cancer and 2 others associated with genital warts. Now using Gardasil 9.
