I was in a coffee shop today & as I was getting my coffee ready to drink a group of about 6 teenage girls began to crowd around the table to prepare their coffees as well. They weren’t rude,
But simply took up space.
I said to my friend that I couldn’t have done that at their age and my friend was stunned bc they were just getting their coffee ready. I said exactly. At their age I was afraid to make anyone “inconvenienced” by requesting space for myself. I didn’t feel worthy of the space, of asking anyone to move an inch for me. I constantly put other’s needs before my own.
I think I did that for most of my life. It’s only within maybe the last 2 years (I’m 53) where I feel I have a right to more than simply exist. Childhood trauma doesn’t just disappear when you become an adult. It festers & rears its ugly head over and over again.
I’m proud of the work I’ve done & will continue to do. I’m proud of those teenagers for taking their space & in a small way knowing their worth.
