On the note of "meet people where they are" On some level, this does mean techies do need to talk to and listen to real people if they hope to build tech that helps said people. On a simpler note, it also means building for sex workers, not speculative investors. We don't need more cryptocurrency grifting.

@soatok@furry.engineer The first time I read this post my takeaway was that I'm not real and my dissociated ass was like "yeah that makes sense", and then I reread it and realized it was about listening to real users instead of your imagination of what a user would be.

@soatok@furry.engineer There's a parallel to politics, or at least there should be. Legislators writing laws that affect groups of people, ought to invite representatives of those groups of people to have a direct say in the process. Allegedly, New Zealand's parliament directly sought the input of sex workers when writing laws such as the Prostitution Reform Act of 2003: https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2003/0028/latest/whole.html

@soatok@furry.engineer some years ago I remember someone pointing out that sex workers weren’t swarming to cryptocurrency, and if there’s a community that *needs* to break out modern banking it’s them. And that tells you something about cryptocurrency. So, yeah, designing for sex workers is definitely the way to go!
