I’m sitting in Mexico City with a beautiful coffee and donut having just finished a German novel about post-Nazism, patriarchy, and indoctrination in separated Berlin thinking about the country I will come home to tomorrow. This morning I saw the ancient chimampas, the Mexico City canals, which have been reduced to 2% of their original area, and our tour guide told us that the locals say that when all the axolotes are gone, the world will end. In 2019 they were measured at 2 regenerating salamanders per km. Today the vast majority of axolotes already live in captivity, where they are experimented on for medical research. +
