1964 Laverne Peterson is featured in the Sunday Star-Bulletin and Advertiser after completing her gender affirming procedures. As she is Hawai'ian, the coverage is distinctly exotified. 1965 Delisa Newton is touted as "The First Negro Sex Change," and in her 1966 autobiography in Sepia says because of her race "it took twice as long to get the operation."
