It is interesting to see old tech having clever solutions for stuff like this, these days the answer is 98% of the time is to slap a CPU on it. It’s boring!

ok fine i’d put there a current limiter which you can make with 2 transistors and a diode. no need for an entire microcontroller

Doesn’t that just need a voltage regulator? It’s disposable so you don’t never need to concern yourself with charging.
