As a result of this, it is not uncommon for me to see stack traces with thousands of individual calls to the wp_options and wp_postmeta tables for a single page during a performance audit, depending on how i was built and many vendors will simply blame your hosting provider for not being able to handle all that brute force.

Filesystem caching or solutions like CloudFlare are often suggested as a solution to those vendors and even the hosts themselves, but if your site is so slow that it takes about a minute for the add-to-cart button to have an effect, then the culprit is elsewhere.
