There was a version of you that existed before you learned to perform. Before you understood which feelings were acceptable and which ones needed to be managed out of sight. Before you knew that your job in every room was to smooth things over, to take up less space, to make the people around you comfortable at the expense of whatever you were actually feeling. That version of you did not disappear.
