To be honest, I don’t think that’s a valid criticism. By definition, “Mastodon GmbH” is also a for-profit company and not a nonprofit organization. Some Fediverse instances might have survived if their funding had been put on a solid footing.
The criticism is really about just that: a solid foundation. Venture capital is simply not a solid foundation for a company and can very quickly lead to its demise. This point is crucial for me, not the fact that it is profit-oriented.

By definition, “Mastodon GmbH” is also a for-profit company and not a nonprofit organization As I recall, that Mastodon is a GmbH and not a gGmbH for reasons of the German government in late 2025, not due to wants or decisions made by any person in the organisation. It's also, apparently a temporal situation until a legally binding non-profit situation can be restored.
