I think that’s a bit too easy an excuse.
Yes, in the end you chose which tools you use, but (to give concrete examples from different fields) if your lawnmower runs with leaded gasoline or you help other people paint their houses using Scheele‘s Green you better have a very good reason for using it.
There’s plenty of tools and techniques that would need a lot of defending if one wanted to use them nowadays in all kinds of disciplines running from cooking to medicine to engineering.

I just realized that there‘s a bit of recent heat in the discussion and that I’m reading 18 hours behind in my feed.
My aim is not to attack you but these are questions I wrestle with too and I don’t see any „easy“ answers.

@Landa@graz.social @b0rk@social.jvns.ca @penguin42@mastodon.org.uk It's not an 'easy' excuse at all. It's a careful, limited use of a tool which I understand. I don't favour use of on-line LLMs using massive amounts of infra and energy. I don't favour using generative models for 'one-shot' solutions to non-existent problems. And I certainly don't think you can replace an engineer with an LLM. But the local models I run are unleaded. They are used sparingly and fed solar power from my roof. I don't need any excuses.
