Dovecot flatcurve does feel like a game changer for email search. I expected the index to be huge, but instead it's ~230M on my 7.3G maildir - 129M for the term list and 100M for the posting list. Thunderbird and Aqua Mail both seem to do IMAP SEARCH in the background. Indexing is on search if you don't turn on automatic indexing. Running "dovecot index" to do the bulk indexing (and maybe -q regularly from a cronjob) should do the trick.
