@Alternatecelt@mastodon.scot The families of many of these large estates with up to their teeth in shenanigans. Even those engaged in what was considered at the time to be 'legitimate' trade.
James Matteson, who built Lews Castle at Stornoway built his fortune on the Chinese Opium trade. The Wentworths built Wentworth Castle from their revenue from the tea trade, Harewood House was built with money from the sugar trade, both exploiting slavery. Great wealth isn't generally earned, it is stolen.

@DarkGalloway@mastodon.scot Absolutely. You can't make that sort of money in one lifetime without it coming from nefarious sources.
