@nerdbear@masto.ai @mclare@recurse.social My only experience of Polar was with analogue chest strap HR monitors that you could only read on the watch that came with them, and I've resisted any form of smartwatch. With Garmin I suspect you could download a .FIT and pass it through GPSbabel, but only after setting up the device via an account. But I've been using my phone to navigate long-distance cycling for years now; OSMand looks like it would do the job if my current choice stops

@HodgesC@mas.to @mclare@recurse.social I haven't had any watch since 1995 or so. I've thought of Garmin/Polar for heart rate etc., and to not carry my phone when going running, and maybe hiking to include a compass as well. Not to wear normally. But I'm not paying for something that requires an account, so I've just been using the Out-Run app that's entirely local, and how Apple's own fitness app also does tracking, hopefully entirely local. (But you need a **** account and phone numbers to install anything.)
