That's because if you force it to be opt-out, fine. You can do that. And then when people opt-out, it's game over. No more interaction. No engagement. No voice reaching those people, ever.
The thing about CW being opt-in is, most people *do*.
But when you take away their choice, fuck you, you lose.
For example, I blocked the passive-aggressive person who started this.

@GeekmomK@infosec.exchange And the result of that is, *the only reason I know about your responses today is I chose to seek them out around the block*. Doesn't matter we're mutuals. Doesn't matter you're in lists I use to make sure I see stuff from important people. Nothing. No notifications. No visible indicators of any kind that this conversation still existed. And now, I'm going to stop checking around the block - and that change is permanent.
