@CalcProgrammer1@mastodon.social This gave me the thought that Linux on phones needs to have a way to switch keyboard programs at runtime like Android does, for maximum flexibility. Maybe one keyboard works better for one task than another one and someone wants to use them interchangeably. I say this because usually I like the swiping and prediction, but if I'm using a terminal or a program that's not as mobile-friendly, I want those extra layouts with alt and stuff like you mention. Helps development, too.

  • @DrewNaylor@mastodon.online Agreed, on screen keyboards should have a standard way to communicate with the rest of the UI including registering themselves to a list of keyboards that can be switched through. I would love to try GNOME Mobile but its OSK is too limiting for me, I would love to use Squeekboard + GNOME.

@DrewNaylor@mastodon.online @CalcProgrammer1@mastodon.social That's why stevia supports `--allow-replacement`. Someone would just need to fix https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/squeekboard/-/issues/361 and it would be simple to switch back and forth in the running session between different keyboards (I do it all the time between stevia development and stable versions) So it's all possible, relevant keyboards just need to follow along.
