In a weird birthday phone call to me, my ex-husband who was an abusive, alcoholic, adulterous and cruel spouse during our 16-year marriage, spoke of his life. He remarried to an heiress with family compounds all over the nation. His life expanded with travel, a winter villa in Mexico, fine dining, events, a summer home in Canada, the best of everything. My life contracted and got far smaller, and my jobs were horrible while I attempted to make ends meet. It seemed as if he was rewarded for his bad behavior. He revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I said, “I’m so sorry” realizing that he’ll forget all his lush adventures as they fade away. But some inner voice in me thought, “Welp, there it finally is, karma." I feel sorry for our adult son who must witness the slow disappearance of his father. 😐
