@thomasfuchs In all seriousness, I'd probably have to say "the knife," or more broadly, the bladed edge. I guess there is a pretty good argument that this was probably actually discovered by a pre-modern hominid species, but evolutionarily, that's pretty close to the same thing. Can't do much of anything "civilizational" without understanding the uses of a blade, from digging to furrowing to carving to hunting.
