I know nothing about Roger Hargreaves' private life, but I choose to read the Mr Men as a series of passive aggressive vengeances for whatever his wife did to piss him off that week.
When he wrote Mr Clever she'd just confessed to an affair with a university Professor.

Obviously I don't choose to read the Mr Men at all, because they're fucking awful, but when the smallest daughter insists on them, I imagine them being written by Roger in his shed, banished from the house, muttering "It's not me that's being unreasonable" and then writing a wizard to magically punish a Mr Man for something his long-suffering wife just did.
