Recently graduated Waterloo PhD student Ryusuke Sugimoto (who Toshiya Hachisuka and I supervised together) has won both a Eurographics Best PhD Thesis Award and the Alain Fournier Award (for Outstanding [Canadian] Doctoral Dissertation in Computer Graphics), for his excellent work on Monte Carlo methods for solving PDE problems in computer graphics.
