it's a way of understanding harmony, not a set of rules for writing music. That part is up to you, the composer. There's plenty of composers that don't know any theory and still write great stuff. That was me for most of my teenage and adult life until fairly recently getting into theory. The inspiration is either there or it isn't for you, although I think knowing theory can potentially make your music more sophisticated. You see more harmonic possibilities.

Anyway, just thought it was interesting. It's a great song regardless of how much theory those guys knew
