Marxist-Leninists typically critically support the Russian Federation for it’s progressive role in opposing imperialism, presently spearheaded by the United States and secondarily from the broader west, such as the UK, France, Germany, and the various settler-colonies and imperialist coalition groups.

This all sounds lovely, but I’m struggling to see Russia’s role in opposing following their repeated incursions into Ukrainian territory and the more recent full-blown military invasion and the subsequent war. I understand imperialism can be summarised by one nation ruling or attempting to rule over another. How does Russia’s actions with Ukraine represent a “progressive” role in opposing it?
