@TheLancashireman@hostux.social Yeah, I've already had a mate saying "Pah! 2800 baud rate was all we had". I'm not actually sure how fast(slow) my first connection was, because after I finished my MA in 1991 I was offline for about 8 years and missed all the very slow bits!

@TheLancashireman@hostux.social @Janeishly@mastodonapp.uk I came here to say exactly that: "56k, you should have seen 14.4k, and before that I used my dad's 300 baud modem with dumb vt100 terminal dialing into a VAX"

@TheLancashireman@hostux.social @Janeishly@mastodonapp.uk my second modem plugged into the adb bus (i know, like atm machine) and i don't think adb could have handled 56k. but at the time it was cool because not only could i dial into school, you could program the modem to play through the computer's speaker so i created a hypercard stack that dialed my bank's automated number and it would go through the different menus letting me know i had spent all my money on dumb things like adb modems and computers (actually not dumb - led to a great career).

@TheLancashireman@hostux.social @Janeishly@mastodonapp.uk 56k was high speed! With it you can even download a full photo in "high resolution" (with a little patience). At the early 300 bauds you could literally see the bytes one by one as they came in.
