It's interesting to me that the two superpowers of post-WWII, the US and USSR/Russia, are now floundering, and both for the same reasons: corrupt oligarchy (that may be redundant; all oligarchies are corrupt) and military hubris.
I'm trying to find a historical parallel. Can't come up many. Alexander's Greece v. Darius' Persia? There just don't seem to be many examples of rival hegemonic powers depleting themselves from within after fighting each other for decades.
