This is a weird take though because it's comparing private spending in one industry with public spending in another. How many other private industries spend $50B per year? Well you'd probably have to compare it to an industry's CapEx spending, right? Let's look up 2022 CapEx data Manufacturing $314B Information Technology $253B (the new AI datacenter $50B spending would bump this to $300B I guess??) Utilities $188B Finance & Insurance $178B Commercial Real Estate $164B Retail $134B Transportation/Warehousing $118B Mining, Oil & Gas $112B Healthcare (facilities -- hospitals, etc) $109B Construction (heavy equipment, machinery) $53B OMG THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY IS SPENDING MORE MONEY ON EXPANDING THEIR INDUSTRY THAN WE SPEND ON ROADS but these numbers really should make you realize how little we spend on public transportation infra compared to other major industries in the USA RT: https://masto.ai/users/rbreich/statuses/116682486139154726
