I personally think the solution is going to wind up being running rclone for days and days at whatever limited rate it can go, get all the files off... backed up to our second internal hard drive, and to the external drive, and then delete the shared drives. Fuck all this bullshit. Most likely Nextcloud is gonna be the solution.

The big issue is that the users, who are not at all sophisticated, need to be able to get access to files relatively easily. The google drive sync tool is pretty easy for them. But I think so will be the Nextcloud sync tool. We've tried to use things like samba and nfs4 but commercial operating systems are trash basically, and so they can't use perfectly good open standards like NFS4 without being a full time nerd.
