7. I left some conclusions to this thread implicit:
i) A "crisis of maintenance" means that reimplementation _is_ going to become more desirable.
ii) The second-order costs of full reimplementations are well-known to us (hint: they aren't in re-writing the code).

8. A crisis of maintenance will probably lead to a crisis of unstable systems arising from significantly more full-scale reimplementations becoming unavoidable. That's probably the biggest question I have right now: which am I more interested in dealing with? (How about you?)
