I honestly want people to start saying “dress-up” instead of “drag”. Like: “the community pride event will end with a family-friendly dress-up show”. And: “RuPaul’s Dress-Up Contest”.
Oh, is there a problem?
I thought drag was just an art form, about performance and dressing up, right? So what’s wrong about using that word?
…
(I feel like 99% of the transfem frustration with the way “drag” is elevated to the Face Of Pride (every goddamn year!) would vanish if people just called it what it really is instead: Dress-Up. But doing that would illustrate immediately that the whole point of modern drag isn’t Dressing Up, it’s something else. Something that pulls in contempt for actual women in a definitely-not-child-friendly way.)
